Michael McCusker
Spanish SKE Tutor
QTS Gained in 2011
Qualification
- BA (Hons) French and Hispanic Studies
- PGCE (Secondary) in French and Spanish
I am an experienced SKE tutor and teacher of Spanish and French. I currently work as Head of MFL in a mixed comprehensive secondary school, managing a team which has dramatically increased the profile of languages across the school. In my current role, I am responsible for the planning of the curriculum at Key Stage 3, GCSE and A Level, as well as ensuring that this is consistently delivered across the department.
Throughout my teaching career, I have successfully mentored trainee MFL teachers, celebrating their successes as well as identifying and working together to develop any areas of improvement. As an MFL teacher, I am a strong advocate of the use of grammar as the foundation to learning a language, as well as ensuring that students are aware of the key phonics of the language to aide their oral proficiency.
I believe that language learning should be delivered in a fun and enthusiastic way, adapted to the ability and needs of the learner, with a lot of focus on exposing students to the richness of the language, as well as the culture of the countries in which the language is spoken. Over the last four years, I have enjoyed sharing my classroom experiences and subject pedagogy with students on their Spanish SKE course, developing their own subject knowledge as well as offering an insight into outstanding classroom practice.
Outside of teaching, I enjoy spending time with family and I have an interest in most sports, especially watching and playing football.
